MADISON MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART / Madison WI

CLAYTON BROTHERSGroup Exhibition

November 4th, 2017 through May 6th, 2018

BIG presents over thirty large-scale, modern and contemporary artworks from MMoCA’s permanent collection, including works by Sam Gilliam, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Rauschenberg and Jennifer Steinkamp. Historically, large-scale art was reserved for mural paintings in the narrative tradition, but soon artists adopted large canvases to capture new and big ideas—particularly the Abstract Expressionists in the 1950s. This shift to a larger scale demanded galleries and museums adjust their spaces and viewers alter their way of engaging with the work. Through these large works, artists created a physical experience that demanded the viewer’s attention.

More than other formal elements in the visual arts—such as color, line, or shape—scale directs attention towards the capacity of the artwork to respond to a specific location and call into play the role of the viewer. Above all, the large-scale works of art in this exhibition have the ability to astonish.

Generous funding for BIG has been provided by Nancy Mohs; JoAnne Robbins and David Falk; the Theda and Tamblin Clark Smith Family Foundation; Cathie and Jim Burgess; Hooper Corporation and General Heating & Air Conditioning; J.H. Findorff & Son Inc.; Nancy Doll and Michael Bernhard; Dane Arts; Bell Laboratories; Karen and Craig Christianson; a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts; and MMoCA Volunteers.

East Looking West A group exhibition curated by Jonathan LeVine

Jonathan LeVine Projects and Heron Arts are pleased to present East Looking West, an exhibition of artists currently based on the West Coast, curated by Jonathan LeVine. East Looking West opens on September 16, 2017 with a reception from 7:00-10:00 PM and runs through October 7, 2017. There will also be an exclusive after party with further details to be released soon.

Jonathan LeVine is known for introducing the West Coast lowbrow aesthetic to the East Coast. With a particular style, vision, and palette influenced by comic books, B-movies, advertising, and car culture, the lowbrow aesthetic is both a cultural reality and a romantic encapsulation of how The West is seen from afar. It represents eternal sunshine, a way of life, the possibility of escape, and a fresh start.

A lot has changed since then, global influence has blurred regional distinctions and the West Coast aesthetic has been re-appropriated throughout the world. Interconnectedness, the Internet, and increased mobility has intensified a swirling of cultures. East Looking West is a stylistic melting pot showcasing West Coast natives and transplants. Revisiting our roots, we focus the lens on the West Coast and take a look at what is happening now.

Melted City 4 @ RISD

CHRISTIAN CLAYTON / Group Exhibition

July 22 - August 26, 2017

ISB Gallery is pleased to present MELTED CITY 4 @ RISD, a group exhibition curated by Filipino artist Louie Cordero and Jordin Isip (RISD alum 1990), which showcases the work of 220 artists, from the Philippines and the United States. Artists were provided a 7”x 7” panel on which to create an image of their own choosing, but offered no other direction other than to ensure that the art not extend beyond the parameters of the panel. With the broadness of the challenge, submissions evidence a richness of intuition, style, color and mark-making — highlighting a diversity of cultural motifs and symbolism. Largely reprised from a prior venue in Quezon City, Philippines, the format suggests continuity and invites interpretive connections despite no premeditated narrative. It calls attention to the viewers’ predisposition to seek meaning in the apparently ordered presentation.
